Capturing Innovation: The 12th HWZ Wood Conference in Cape Town

As a seasoned event photographer, I had the privilege of documenting the 12th HWZ Wood Conference in Cape Town for the fifth time. This annual gathering, held on 28th February 2023 at the CTICC, brought together architects, engineers, and construction professionals eager to explore the cutting-edge possibilities of building with wood.

Setting the Scene

The conference theme, "Timber - the potential for engineering and architecture," set the tone for a day filled with insights and inspiration. As I arrived at the CTICC in the early morning light, I was struck by the buzz of anticipation among the arriving delegates. The East and West Ballroom had been transformed into a hub of wooden innovation, with banners showcasing impressive timber structures and informative displays dotting the space.

With my camera in hand, I captured the essence of this knowledge-based platform that connects industry professionals at the forefront of timber innovations. The challenge of photographing such an event lies in balancing the technical aspects of indoor photography with the need to capture the energy and engagement of the participants.

A Day of Learning and Networking

From behind the lens, I witnessed a vibrant atmosphere of participants, both in-person and online, engaging in constructive discussions. The eagerness of architects to learn about wood construction possibilities was palpable, reflecting the growing trend towards sustainable building practices in Africa. The hybrid nature of the conference, accommodating both physical and virtual attendees, presented unique photographic opportunities to showcase the blend of traditional conference settings with modern technology.

My photographic journey took me through various aspects of the conference:

  1. Speaker Presentations: I had the opportunity to photograph all the speakers, including international experts like Lukas Schiebe from Mozambique and Wolfgang Hebenstreit from Austria. These images showcase the passion and expertise behind modern timber construction techniques. Capturing the speakers' expressions and gestures during their presentations helped convey the enthusiasm and knowledge shared throughout the day.
  2. Networking Sessions: During tea and lunch breaks, I captured the buzz of professionals exchanging ideas and forging connections. These candid shots highlight the collaborative spirit of the wood construction community. The challenge here was to capture genuine moments of interaction without disrupting the natural flow of conversations.
  3. Exhibition Areas: My lens focused on the displays of timber products and innovative building solutions, providing visual evidence of the advancements in the industry. Close-up shots of timber samples and scale models of timber buildings offered a tactile dimension to the photography, allowing viewers to almost feel the textures and appreciate the craftsmanship.
  4. CTICC Venue: I documented the impressive setup of the East and West Ballroom, showcasing how the CTICC transformed into a hub of wooden innovation for the day. Wide-angle shots of the venue helped to convey the scale of the event, while detail shots highlighted the thoughtful integration of wooden elements in the conference setup.
  5. Project Showcases: Many presentations featured remarkable timber construction projects. I photographed these visual aids, which ranged from the Carbon Binding House in Mozambique to the BURJ Zanzibar project. These images serve as a visual record of the cutting-edge projects shaping the future of timber construction across the globe.

Reflecting on the Impact

As I reflect on the images captured, it's clear that the HWZ Wood Conference continues to play a crucial role in advancing sustainable construction practices in Africa. The event not only showcases the aesthetic appeal of timber buildings but also emphasizes their environmental benefits and structural capabilities.

The photography from this event serves multiple purposes. It documents the growth of the timber construction industry in Africa, provides valuable marketing material for future conferences, and offers participants a visual record of their experience. Through my lens, I aimed to capture not just the facts of the event, but also the emotion and inspiration that permeated the conference.

For architects and construction professionals looking to stay at the forefront of sustainable building practices, the HWZ Wood Conference remains an unmissable event. As a photographer, it's been a rewarding experience to document the growth and innovation in this field over the years, watching as timber construction moves from a niche interest to a mainstream building solution.

Looking to the Future

The next time you see a striking timber structure rising in an African city, remember that its conception might well have begun at events like the HWZ Wood Conference, where ideas are shared, innovations are born, and the future of sustainable construction takes shape.

As we look ahead to future conferences, it's exciting to imagine the new developments and projects that will be showcased. The role of event photography in documenting this journey cannot be understated – it provides a visual narrative of the timber construction revolution, one frame at a time.
