Illuminating Cape Town's N1 Highway: A Commercial Photographer's Perspective


As a commercial photographer based in Cape Town, I've had the privilege of documenting our city's evolution through my lens. Recently, I was tasked with an exciting project that perfectly encapsulates Cape Town's commitment to innovation and sustainability: photographing the newly installed LED streetlights along the iconic N1 highway.


The N1: More Than Just a Road


The N1 is not just any highway; it's a lifeline that connects Cape Town to the rest of South Africa and beyond. Stretching from our beautiful Mother City through Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Polokwane, all the way to Beit Bridge on the Zimbabwe border, the N1 forms the first section of the legendary Cape to Cairo Road. This project was about more than just upgrading lights – it was about enhancing a crucial piece of South African infrastructure.


Capturing the Light: A Photographer's Challenge


As a commercial photographer, this project presented unique challenges and opportunities. The brief required me to showcase the new LED streetlights in action, highlighting their benefits while capturing the essence of Cape Town's beauty. This meant carefully timing my shots to coincide with the magical moments just after sunset when the new lights would shine brightest against the dimming sky.


Working against the clock, I set up my equipment at various strategic points along the N1. My trusty tripod became my best friend as I captured long exposures that would reveal the flow of traffic and the spread of light along the highway.


The Technical Marvel: LED Streetlights in Focus


The star of this photoshoot was undoubtedly the new LED streetlight installation. Supplied by BEKA Schréder, this retrofit solution replaced the old HID streetlights with state-of-the-art AVENTO 3 and LEDLUME range LED fixtures. As I framed each shot, I was conscious of the need to visually communicate the key benefits of this upgrade:

A Photographer's Perspective on Progress
