Illuminating Safety: Capturing Shell's Innovative LED Lighting Project in Cape Town

A Beacon of Safety on Bottelary Road

As a commercial photographer based in Cape Town, I've had the privilege of documenting numerous innovative projects across our beautiful city. Recently, I was entrusted with an exciting assignment that perfectly encapsulates the intersection of safety, sustainability, and modern design: photographing the newly installed LED lighting solution at the Shell service station on Bottelary Road, just off the R300 in Brackenfell.

The Project: More Than Just a Petrol Station

The Shell Brackengate @R300 is not your average service station. This newly constructed facility goes beyond the traditional offerings, featuring a Spar convenience store, a bottle store, and a Vida Shop. The project's primary goal was to create an environment where people feel safe to stop at night - a crucial consideration for any 24-hour facility.

As I set up my equipment to capture this modern marvel, I was struck by the thoughtful integration of South African-designed and manufactured LED lighting solutions. Each element was carefully chosen to enhance safety, efficiency, and aesthetics.

Capturing the Light: A Photographer's Perspective

One of the most challenging aspects of this shoot was accurately representing the various lighting solutions in their best light (pun intended). The LEDTEC R recessed lowbay fixtures, providing the under-canopy lighting, required careful exposure settings to showcase their impressive brightness without overexposing the surrounding areas.

As a photographer, I was particularly impressed by how these fixtures outperform other LED lowbay luminaires in terms of energy savings and long-term performance. Capturing this efficiency visually meant showcasing the even distribution of light and the absence of dark spots or glare.

BEKAPOLE: Strength in Simplicity

While lighting fixtures often steal the show, the BEKAPOLE supporting the ZELA luminaires deserved attention in its own right. As a photographer, I'm always looking for ways to tell a complete story through images. In this case, it meant finding creative angles to highlight the poles' aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.

The non-corrosive, maintenance-free nature of these poles might not be immediately apparent in a photograph, but their sleek design and perfect integration with the overall aesthetic of the service station certainly are. I made sure to capture shots that emphasised their contribution to the site's modern, clean look.

QVAL: Illuminating the Details

The QVAL LED bulkheads installed around the buildings and in the Vida shop courtyard presented an exciting opportunity to focus on the finer details of the lighting design. These decorative yet high-performance fixtures required a nuanced approach to photography.

I paid particular attention to capturing the strong white light and high colour rendering index these fixtures provide. Through carefully timed exposures, I aimed to demonstrate how the QVAL's indirect reflector design achieves glare-free lighting while maintaining high-performing light distribution.

The Bigger Picture: Safety Through Illumination

As I worked through the evening, capturing the service station from various angles and perspectives, the overarching theme of safety through illumination became increasingly apparent. Each lighting element, from the bright canopy to the ambient area lighting and the detailed bulkheads, contributes to an environment where customers feel secure.

This project reinforced for me the critical role that thoughtful lighting design plays in our urban landscape. As a photographer, my job was not just to document the fixtures themselves, but to capture the atmosphere they create - one of safety, efficiency, and modern aesthetics.

Sustainability in Focus

Beyond safety, the energy efficiency of these LED solutions was a key aspect of the project. While not directly visible, this efficiency is an essential part of the story. I made sure to document information panels and any visual elements that could help convey the sustainable aspects of this lighting solution to viewers of my photographs.

A Collaborative Effort

Projects like this are never the work of a single entity. As I photographed the site, I was mindful of the collaborative effort that brought this innovative lighting solution to life. The partnership between Shell, Triangle Development, DKC Consulting Engineers, Dorman Projects, and the LED lighting manufacturer showcases what's possible when expertise across different fields comes together.

Lessons from Behind the Lens

This project reinforced several key lessons for me as a commercial photographer:

  • Preparation is key: Understanding the technical aspects of the lighting solutions before the shoot allowed me to plan my shots more effectively.
  • Timing is everything: Capturing the perfect balance between natural light and the LED lighting required precise timing and patience.
  • Tell a complete story: While the lighting was the star, capturing the overall ambience and functionality of the space was crucial to telling the full story of this project.
  • Technical knowledge matters: Having a grasp of lighting technology helped me better communicate the benefits of these LED solutions through my images.

Illuminating the Future of Commercial Spaces

As a Cape Town photographer specialising in commercial and infrastructure projects, assignments like the Shell Brackengate @R300 service station remind me of the vital role professional photography plays in showcasing innovation. Through our lenses, we not only capture the physical attributes of a project but also help communicate the values and forward-thinking approach of the companies involved.

For businesses undertaking similar projects - whether it's a service station, a retail space, or any commercial venture where lighting plays a crucial role - professional photography can be an invaluable asset. It brings your investments to light, showcasing not just the aesthetic appeal but also the functional benefits and commitment to safety and sustainability.

If you have a project that merges innovation, safety, and sustainability, and you want to ensure it's captured in its best light, I'd be thrilled to bring my expertise and passion for Cape Town's evolving landscape to your endeavour.
